Nearly everything in Vaduz sits on one car-free street, the Städtle. The mountains are a short bus ride up.

Vaduz Castle

Walk the steep path up for the view over the Rhine valley. Exterior only, it is the Prince's home.

The country's signature ridge walk, with secured cables and big drops. Serious footing needed, July to September.

There is no airport, so here is the trick

Fly into Zurich (ZRH)The standard gateway, about 115 km away. St. Gallen-Altenrhein is closer but tiny; Friedrichshafen and Innsbruck also work.

Train to SargansDirect trains from Zurich Airport roughly every 30 minutes, about 1 hour 10.

Bus 11 into VaduzAt Sargans, switch to LIEmobil bus line 11 toward Feldkirch. About 25 to 30 minutes to Vaduz Post. Pay the driver by card or cash.

Or come from Feldkirch, AustriaBus 11 leaves right outside Feldkirch station and runs across the border through Schaan and Vaduz. A day ticket for all zones is CHF 12.

Two ways to do it

The day trip

4 to 6 hours from Zurich or the border

Arrive at Vaduz Post by mid-morning.
Walk the Städtle: Postal Museum, the Treasure Chamber, one art or history museum.
Collect the three-franc passport stamp at the Liechtenstein Center.
Climb to Vaduz Castle for the view, past the vineyards and the Red House.
A short wine tasting, or the Citytrain, then bus back.

The weekend

2 days, town plus mountains

Day 1: Vaduz museums, castle walk, wine, and an easy Rhine-path stroll. Overnight in Vaduz.
Day 2: Bus up to Malbun, ride the Sareis chairlift, hike a ridge trail.
Stop at Steg and the Gänglesee lake, and the Walser village of Triesenberg on the way down.
Winter swap: trade the hike for skiing Malbun's 23 km of pistes.

Practical basics

Best time

Mid-May to late September for hiking. September is the sweet spot. December to March for skiing in Malbun.

Budget

Swiss prices. Roughly CHF 120 a day on a budget, more if you eat out. Museums about CHF 15 each.

Where to stay

Vaduz for museums and the city, Malbun for hiking and skiing. A youth hostel sits in Schaan on the bus line.

Money & language

Swiss francs, cards everywhere, euros often accepted. German is official, English is widely understood.

Getting around

The LIEmobil buses reach almost everything. A car only helps for remote trailheads and off-hours.

Connectivity

Good mobile coverage, but Liechtenstein is not in the EU, so EU roaming caps may not apply. Check your plan.
